How the number is built
A NIE reads as one opening letter (X, Y or Z), seven numbers in the middle, and a final check letter to keep it honest — something like X-2468013-C. The National Police issue it once and it sticks to you for life, so a summer back home and a return to Sevilla for the next semester never resets it.
If you carry an EU, EEA or Swiss passport you usually pick yours up as a green paper certificate or a green card the size of a metro ticket. Arrive from outside the EU and the very same number appears on your TIE residence card instead.
